Block Facebook from tracking you
Facebook is with more than 600 million users the most popular social networking site in the world. It is also an advertising company that made US$2 billion revenues from ads in the year 2010.
Why are Facebook ads so successful? Not only can advertisers target you specifically based on your demographics and stated interests, Facebook is also tracking you on any website you visit that has a Facebook like-button. This way, Facebook knows exactly the pages you visit, what you are currently looking for and based on that determines what you might want to purchase in the near future. And the ads you get to see are specifically target to that.
Does that make you feel uncomfortable? Then just block all the Facebook tracking and their ads with Adblock Plus! It’s very easy:
All you need to do is install Adblock Plus for Firefox or Chrome. This will get rid of all the ads when you visit Facebook. As a next step you can also stop them from tracking you by blocking all like-buttons from any website by subscribing for free to the “Antisocial” list. If you are an Adblock Plus user in Firefox you can simply click here and the list will be added to your filter rules.
Users of Chrome Adblock Plus need to add the filter rule manually in two simple steps:
Step1: Go to Adblock Plus Options
Right-click on the Adblock Plus logo in your Chrome address-bar and choose “Options”. In the tab “Filter lists” you can activate filter lists by activating the respective check-box.
However, the required filter list to block Facebook buttons is not listed here so in the next step you’ll need to activate the subscription manually by entering the URL into the “Add URL” field..
Step2: Add the Antisocial filter list
At the bottom of the “Filter lists” tab you can find a field where you can manually add the URL of a filter list you would like to subscribe to.
Add the following URL here:
https://adversity.googlecode.com/hg/Antisocial.txt
That’s it. The next time you visit a website with social media integration, the Facebook “spy-button” will be blocked automatically so you can surf without having to worry about what a company like Facebook might do with all the information they have about you.
